The Metamorphosis of a Chinese Butterfly (right panel)

Acrylic on canvas. 20″ x 16″ -1992

This is the right panel of a triptych, Frankly the other two panels aren’t that good, and this one can stand on its own, so here it is. This was an experimental time for me, working with unusual colors (the central figure is a combination of gold acrylic and pthalo blue) and combining flat color and design with realistic depth on the figures. I can see influences from Mucha here trying to be realized. And to a lesser extent the butterflies and peacocks of Tiffany and art nouveau.
